What is Reiki? A Beginner’s Guide to Energy Healing

Have you ever wondered what Reiki actually is?

Perhaps a friend has recommended it, you’ve seen it mentioned online, or you’ve been curious about trying it but weren’t quite sure what to expect.

If so, you’re not alone. It’s one of the questions I’m asked most often.

Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive complementary therapy that many people find deeply relaxing. While everyone’s experience is unique, many clients leave feeling calmer, lighter and more like themselves again.

At Align Wellbeing in Gamlingay, near Biggleswade and St Neots, I offer treatments in a peaceful countryside setting designed to help you relax, recharge, and reconnect with yourself. If you’re curious about experiencing Reiki for yourself, you can find out more about my Wellbeing Treatments or read on to discover more.

The word Reiki comes from Japan and is often translated as universal life energy.

Developed by Mikao Usui in the early 1900s, Reiki is based on the idea that our wellbeing is supported when our energy is flowing freely. Modern life, stress, illness, grief, anxiety and emotional challenges can all leave us feeling out of balance.

During a Reiki treatment, the intention is to gently release any energy that may have become blocked, stuck or stagnant, while allowing fresh universal life energy to flow to where it’s needed most.

The practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above different areas of the body, allowing you relax deeply while this gentle process unfolds.

Many people describe leaving a treatment feeling lighter, calmer, more balanced and deeply relaxed.

If you’re visiting Align Wellbeing for your first Reiki appointment, everything is designed to help you feel comfortable and relaxed.

We’ll begin with a friendly chat about how you’ve been feeling and what you’d like to get from your visit.

You’ll then lie fully clothed on a comfortable treatment couch, covered with soft blankets if you’d like, while calming music plays in the background.

As I gently place my hands on or just above different areas of your body, many people describe feeling:

  • A deep sense of relaxation
  • Warmth or gentle tingling
  • A feeling of peace or emotional release
  • Lightness or a sense of letting go
  • As though they’ve had a really restorative rest

Some people notice very little during the treatment itself and simply realise afterwards that they feel calmer, lighter or clearer in their thinking. Every experience is different, and there’s no right or wrong way to experience Reiki.

While Reiki isn’t a replacement for medical treatment, many people choose it as a complementary therapy alongside conventional healthcare.

Clients often tell me they feel:

  • More relaxed
  • Less overwhelmed
  • Better able to cope with stress
  • More balanced emotionally
  • More connected to themselves
  • Rested after taking time out to simply be

For many people, the greatest benefit is having permission to pause. In a world that’s always encouraging us to do more, Reiki offers a chance to simply slow down.

At Align Wellbeing, I offer both Reiki & Crystal Healing and Angelic Reiki.

Traditional Reiki follows the Usui system and focuses on supporting your natural energy flow through gentle hands-on healing.

Angelic Reiki incorporates a more spiritual approach and may appeal to those who feel drawn to working with angelic energy alongside Reiki.

If you’re unsure which is right for you, don’t worry. I’m always happy to talk through the differences and help you choose the treatment that feels like the best fit.

Not at all. You don’t need to believe in Reiki for it to be a relaxing experience

Many people book their first Reiki treatment simply because they’re feeling stressed, exhausted or in need of some time to recharge. You don’t need any previous experience or spiritual beliefs.

Just come along with an open mind and allow yourself an hour away from the demands of everyday life to rest and be taken care of.

Reiki may be worth exploring if you’re looking for a gentle way to relax, reconnect with yourself and support your overall wellbeing. It can be particularly beneficial for those struggling with stress, anxiety, poor sleep, grief, or overwhelm.

Many of my clients tell me that what they value most isn’t just the treatment itself, but the opportunity to pause, breathe and leave feeling calmer than when they arrived.

If that sounds like something you could benefit from, I’d love to welcome you to Align Wellbeing. You can book your appointment online whenever you’re ready. If you’d like to ask a few questions first, you’re also very welcome to get in touch.

Whether you’re completely new to Reiki or simply looking for a peaceful hour to recharge, I hope this guide has helped you understand a little more about this gentle complementary therapy.
